I archived existing backups and started with fresh TM backups when TM moved to APFS images with Big Sur. I use TM over the network to back up four household Macs to a 12 TB enterprise drive connected by USB 3 to our always-on 2014 Mac mini. It's a great first layer of defense against failure of a single machine. I've found it extremely reliable for the last several years-more reliable, in fact, than other Apple cloud services. I keep almost all of my daily-use stuff in iCloud Drive. Four different things, not all of which a purist would call "backups," but all of which are intended to help protect against data loss.
